"Hi Bill, we're finally replacing the old siding on our home (Maryland) and have narrowed it down to either Hardie Board or Gentek Sequoia Select. The house is a single-story with a walk out basement, and contractors have measured it at roughly 1,700 square feet of siding. One company quoted $17,500 for the Hardie installation, which works out to about $12 per square foot, while the Gentek Sequoia Select option came in closer to $7.50 per square foot. The installer also mentioned that Hardie is much more labor-intensive, but I got the impression he wasn't a big fan of installing it. Based on these numbers, which direction would you go?"

Matt, if you're planning to stay in the home for many years, then paying more for Hardie Board probably makes sense because it's likely to provide better long-term durability. If your timeline is shorter—or you're simply unsure—I'd lean toward the Gentek Sequoia Select. At roughly $7.50 per square foot, that seems like a competitive price for a quality vinyl siding product.

Gentek Concord Vinyl Siding
The Concord is an entry level cladding that is .042" in thickness, available in 5 unique profiles and comes in 16 colors. The Concord can also be ordered as a board and batten which is more expensive but will have a slightly thicker panel.

Gentek Sequoia Select
Consumers can expect to pay $1 to $1.50 per square foot for the Sequoia Select panels. This is Gentek's premium vinyl siding, although it isn't their foam backed option. Gentek Berkshire Beaded
The Berkshire Beaded is still one of the higher end options from Gentek and uses that nice beaded ridge in the middle to create texture and shadow. This creates a very distinctive look that has an almost old southern charm to it. The Berkshire has a . 040" thickness, comes in a single profile and is available in 14 different color options.

Gentek Enfusion Siding
The Enfusion is an EPS rigid foam panel that will provide straighter walls than normal vinyl siding. This foam backed or insulated option is certainly more expensive than simple vinyl panels but is more resistant to denting and will also provide some additional energy efficiency that can more than cover the extra cost over the life of the siding.

Additonal Materials
All cladding projects require additional materials from the actual siding panels themselves. This can include a number of items such as housewrap, nails, soffits, trim pieces, starter boards, j channels and other decorative pieces. As a rule, these will run $1 to $2 per square foot.

Gentek Siding Warranty
The Gentek warranty is a Limited Lifetime Warranty that covers panel defects such as blistering, flaking and peeling under normal use. Gentek will cover the cost of the siding for as long as the owner owns their home. The warranty is transferrable, however after the owner transfer, the company will only cover 10% of the price from years 14 on from the original date. (10 years after purchase date the company would cover 50% of the replacement cost.)
The warranty includes a fading provision against fading more than Delta E 4 Hunter Units. There is also a 50 year hail provision that kicks in if the homeowner's insurance does not cover this, although the company does not cover installation or freight costs. There are a number of exclusions and limitations to the warranty and consumers should always read the latest company warranty to make sure the understand exactly what is covered and not covered.
