Can I Paint My Nailite Vinyl Siding?

My nailite shakes that were installed 20 years ago have faded substantially and very unevenly. Can they be painted?

Ruth, yes you can paint vinyl siding...buuuut it does typically voice the warranty. Since your siding is 20 years old, this is probably not an issue. Painting your vinyl siding will also cost you money, unless you do it yourself...and may not last as long as your thing. For the painted siding to last and not peel or crack, you would want to prime the siding before your paint it.

If this was my home and I was unsure of whether to take this step or not, I would buy a small can of primer and small can of paint. I would find an out of the way square on my home. I would quickly sand the vinyl siding, wipe it clean, then prime it, let it dry, then paint it. Let it sit for a week and reassess.

I would also calculate how long it would take to do the whole house and how much it would cost to go through this process. Then I would make the decision of whether or not it makes sense to paint the vinyl siding.

Excessive Fading

We bought their rough sawn cedar siding and it looks bad after only 5 years. It was supposed to be a forrest green but it's more like lime at this point. My husband and I may just remove it and try and file a warranty claim. Several installers recommended we use a lighter color and I would now agree with them, but it does us little good now. I felt the fading was excessive.

Unhappy Customer

I used the vinyl shake siding and its been 10 years and the siding is in desperate need of repairs. I've tried contacting their warranty department numerous times but they seem like they our stonewalling. They want $10K to repair what I consider to be a shoddy product. Apparently their newer siding is more UV resistant but there is also significant fading. This is a bad product from a bad company in my opinion. If I had to do it all again I would go with the Hardie Board fiber cement, it just seems like it holds up better over time.

Vinyl Cedar Shake

The Nailite vinyl cedar shake has faded significantly over the 8 years its been on our home. They actually replaced the siding because of fading and now its time to do it all again. Just a bad product that can't weather the elements of the South. There must be better siding options out there, but I'm not really sure what's the right call. Just not this stuff.
