Diamond Kote Company Information
DK is an American company and employee owned, which is pretty rare in this industry. The company operates their Wisconsin manufacturing facility, as well as two additional plants - one in Stuart, Iowa and the other in Rapid City, South Dakota. Today, DK products can be found in most of the contiguous United States.
Their flagship product is LP SmartSide Diamond Kote. Specifically, this is a "type" of the Smartside panels that use DK's high end finish and unique color and paint technology. The result is better resistance to both weathering and fading when compared to the traditional LP Smartside panels.

James Hardie vs LP Smartside
My husband and I were considering both Hardie lap and LP Smartside with the Diamond Kote finish. So, I was leaning toward the Hardie, but he did research and came up with some significant pros on the smartside option. Specifically, less prone to breaking the panels, long panel lengths, and better finish with the Diamond Kote. Price wise they were similar, with the LP being slightly more expensive. They installed it last April and it looks great. Of course, the real test will be whether it can truly hold up over time. Fingers crossed!

[Site Editor's Answer]
Donna, thanks for the email and the update. Please let us know how it holds up as I'm sure many of our site readers would love to know if it fades or gets chalky. Unfortunately, I have heard the rare case of this from homeowners. However, this is the very rare case so in general it seems that when it comes to James Hardie vs LP Smartside, they are both pretty great products in general. Not cheap, but hopefully they do provide good value over time.
