The company specializes in a wood composite siding line that can be ordered in lap, board and batten, panel, shake, shingle, and nickel gap. The Diamond Kote engineered wood siding uses ingredients like zinc borate, resin, and wax to create a home siding that resists moisture, etc. While it does not resist as well as non-organic materials like vinyl, Diamond Kote is a great looking siding option for homeowners.

The company operates their Wisconsin manufacturing facility, as well as two additional plants - one in Stuart, Iowa and the other in Rapid City, South Dakota. Today, DK products can be found in most of the contiguous United States. The Diamond Kote product uses their proprietary Rigidstack™ technology, which the company claims is nearly 400% stronger than other products in the engineered wood space. Diamond Kote offers their customers a 50 year warranty on the product and 30 years on fading. However, this comes with a big caveat. The product must be properly transported, maintained, handled, finished, and installed in accordance with the company/product instructions. This opens up the possibility of the company denying warranty claims based on any number of these metrics.

LP Smartside is a great product. Here is why I like it: long board options up to 16 feet. This means less joints along the wall, which for many consumers is a big deal. Diamond Kote siding is built on LP Smartside technology, but uses more engineering in their coating process. It's more engineered, but is also supposed to be more rigid and more hail and termite resistant. There are loads of people out there that like LP SmartSide better than Hardie Board and vice versa. I personally really like the look of the Diamond Kote product and am impressed with the 50 year warranty on their boards. I think the boards do a much better job of looking like a real wood grain. So if this is the look you are going for, then I would stick with the Diamond Kote, which should run $2 to $4 less per square foot than Hardie Board. I say this with all of my answers to siding questions, but make sure that the company you hire, likes the product they are installing and has plenty of experience. "My husband and I were considering both Hardie lap and LP Smartside with the Diamond Kote finish. So, I was leaning toward the Hardie, but he did research and came up with some significant pros on the smartside option. Specifically, less prone to breaking the panels, long panel lengths, and better finish with the Diamond Kote. Price wise they were similar, with the LP being slightly more expensive. They installed it last April and it looks great. Of course, the real test will be whether it can truly hold up over time. Fingers crossed!"
Donna, thanks for the email and the update. Please let us know how it holds up as I'm sure many of our site readers would love to know if it fades or gets chalky. Unfortunately, I have heard the rare case of this from homeowners. However, this is the very rare case so in general it seems that when it comes to James Hardie vs LP Smartside, they are both pretty great products in general.
