Gentek Vinyl Siding QualityWe're knee deep in researching vinyl siding for our home and have narrowed it down to Gentek and Georgia Pacific. Here in New York lots of people seem to use (or have at least heard of) GP. Their builder grade siding does not include the rolled nail hem that is standard with Gentek's comparable product. My online search online indicated problems with aluminum siding from Gentek, but no issues with their vinyl products. I would love to get some opinions on whether their product is good quality.
[Contractor Response]Gentek is one of my go to brands - I've liked the jobs I used it on (as have my customers). Every siding manufacturer offers some limited lifetime warranty on their products that includes a fade protection clause. However, all vinyl siding will fade over time, typically the warranty includes the number of shades that the product can fade to and that the product will fade the same based on the amount of sun exposure. I've never used Georgia Pacific siding as it is not available where I live, so I can't provide any meaningful comparison.
Gentek vs RoyalI think Royal vinyl siding is top notch, more durable and thicker than Gentek siding, plus they use an extra fold in their nailing strip that adds some security.
Technical QuestionWe are adding soffits to our house. I currently have beadboard that uses a tongue and groove and some of the boards need to be replaced - I'm looking to use 4' by 8' MDF boards and want to make sure this will work.
[Contractor Response]Gentek makes a rigid vinyl beaded soffit that is great for porches and overhangs. I'm not sure if it's available where you live. I believe Royal also makes a rigid board as well. The vinyl boards are going to be much better than an MDF that will rot over time. I don't know if it's available in your part of the country, but there is a fairly rigid beaded vinyl soffit panel that i have used on overhang's & porches. Do a search for Royal or Gentek Building Products & see if you can track it down....Highly recommended & rot free unlike MDF or wood generally.
