Weatherboard Basics

Weatherboard is a bit of an old-school term that is synonymous with clapboard, bevel, and lap siding. All of these terms more or less refer to a horizontal siding where the bottom edge is slightly thicker than the top edge. Each board is placed above the board below it with just a bit of overlap between the boards. The beveled lower edge allows the water to be effectively sloughed off and away from the walls. The result is an effective barrier against water, snow, and moisture from getting behind the boards where they could eventually cause mold and wood rot. Weatherboards are almost always horizontal and they have a nice classic, and often a colonial clapboard, look to them.

Weatherboard Materials

Weatherboards can be made for any number of materials, although traditionally weatherboards were some type of real wood species, common examples include pine, spruce and ash. Wood is still used, although vinyl and fiber cement are now more popular due to their numerous advantage of her real wood panels. For instance, vinyl siding requires little to no maintenance, does not require any painting and is quite durable, especially the foam backed panels. Likewise, fiber cement is very durable, although it does need to be painted, which can be seen as either a good thing or a bad thing.

Additional Material Costs

All siding projects are going to require additional materials, which may or may not be included in the contractors bid price. Some of these materials include items such as collated nails, under sheething, J channels and F channels, corner posts, soffits and facia board, as well as starter courses.

Labor And Installation Cost

Contractor bids for the labor installation will typically run$ 1 to $4 dollars per square foot, depending on the material used. Fiber cement installation tends to run around $1 more due to the weight of the boards and the specialized tool needed to cut the boards. Vinyl siding and real wood should run $1 to $3 per square foot depending on the installation pattern the number of windows that they have to side around, and any other project specifics that might come up. Removing the existing siding can also be part of that cost as well and will typically cost $.50 to $1 per square foot. More on siding removal costs.

Contractor bids will vary depending on what part of the country you live in, so make sure to get three competitive bids from contractors with good standing in your neighborhood to find the most competitively priced bid and to see some of the different materials that they recommend.
