Vertical Siding Prices
Vertical siding prices range from $2.50 to $11 full installed. This is a big cost difference that is mostly dependent on the board prices, which vary considerably. Vertical siding comes in all sorts of different materials, including vinyl, foam backed vinyl, wood and even metals like aluminum and steel. Most residential homes that use siding have horizontal panels or boards, as opposed to vertical panels or shingle or shake siding. Vertical siding is quite versatile in terms of the overall look and style that it can impart to a home.
Here are some industry averages for the material costs for some of the most common types of vertical boards.
Vertical Vinyl Siding
Many manufacturers make vertical vinyl siding panels and boards. Because the vertical panels vary very little from normal horizontal lap siding, the costs are going to be very similar.
Certain manufacturers make vertical insulated vinyl siding boards that have more rigidity than simple vinyl and will add some R value or insulating to the walls.
Board And Batten Siding
Board and battens are always done vertically. Typcially the boards are 4.5" to 7" in width and are laid vertically to the home. A thinner batten, typically 1" to 2.5" wide, is placed either in the middle of the board or between the boards. The batten is thicker than the board and therefore adds a "stripe" look to the home. Board and battens are often said to be rustic looking, although homeowners can certainly add additional features and accent areas if they want to alter this look or perception. Board and battens can be made out of a number of different materials, including plywood, vinyl and fiber cement.
Fiber cement can certainly be hung vertically and most manufacturers offer this option, especially for commercial applications.
Metal & Aluminum
Metal and aluminum siding is often available in a vertical panel and often has a great look to it - very modern and clean.
Additional Material Price
As with any project like this, homeowners can expect additional materials for putting siding on a home, including housewrap, fasia and soffit boards, starting courses, nails, mounting blocks, decorative pieces, etc. The quantity and price for these materials will vary, but should fall somewhere near the $1 to $2 per square foot mark. Most contractors or companies will break down their bids by materials and labor.
Vertical siding installation will run $1 to $4 per square foot. This encompasses the lower end cost of say simple vinyl boards as well as the higher cost of fiber cement boards that require painting and cutting that requires a specialized tool and is more difficult due to the heavier weight of the boards.
