Insulated Vinyl Siding Basics

Insulated cladding is typically a horizontal lap siding that has a foam material applied to the back of the panel. Most of the main siding manufacturers offer this option and they often have unique, trademarked names for their foam backing. In general they are all very similar in design and function. There are three main advantages to using an insulated vinyl siding.

The first advantage, (which most contractors agree on) is that the foam backing creates a straighter, truer wall. This is especially important for longer boards, think 12' or 16' panels. The second advantage is that these stronger boards will not dent as easily as a non foam backed cladding. Finally, many companies claim that their products provides significant insulation and thus better energy efficiency to the home. While this may be true to some extent (higher R value), there are many contractors who feel the claim is overstated. Many would agree that insulated vinyl siding does provide some added energy efficiency to the walls of a home.
